The Other Side of Me

I was having a brief lunch conversation with my colleagues and we started to talk about our own nationality. Honestly, I don't really like my nationality very much. This has nothing to do with me being abroad for months, neither is it due to traveling overseas too much. Actually, I don't feel I've traveled a lot.

Anyway to cut the whole entry short, I feel Singaporeans aren't gracious enough.

  • Most drivers do not give way on the roads even when you signaled.
  • People rushing in buses, trains to get seats.
  • People refusing to move in to the back of the buses etc.
Most of us have gone through proper education but why are going down on our standards of being nice to people. Sometimes, I wonder why do I need to be rude to a stranger? Is it because I demanding or I'm rebutting that I was not "treated" well enough.

If a city is going more cosmopolitan, does it really mean that we have to sacrifice certain things to reach that standards? New York is a vast city, no doubt the people have this "I don't have the time for you" or "I can't be bothered attitude". Tokyo is a city but on the other hand, why are the people so well mannered?

Where are we going to head as Singapore is "trying" to progress. Has it reached a stagnant stage where improvements in our courtesy is unattainable at all?
